cloud and here we are as I'm aligning
all of my stuff up so I can sort of look
at the camera gosh I got like all kinds
of I'm a little glowy today this is like
pretty cool I guess Angelic let's see
let's swing that mic there do that how
do everybody what was that mute your
notifications mute my notifications yes
because those things drive me nuts it
said let's see let's make it sure okay
wow I had my I've had my do not disturb
this is interesting I've had my do not
disturb on I think since the last time
we met and yet I still get stuff
so ah let's see let's try for one hour
let's try that or maybe it just oh I
think what I did is it
just we're gonna find out I don't think
I think I gotta work on that because I
think my notifications are coming in
when they shouldn't and I gotta go
figure out what it what is overright
yeah do not disturb on okay we're going
to find out if if you hear a bunch of
beeps I'll cuss we may edit it out we
may not I can't I don't know did you
edit that out last time or did we keep
that in no I took
it it was a little longer than I liked
so I just ch chopped it so you guys
missed out there you go you missed out
on some really good like behind the
scenes stuff but oh well actually so did
the podcast people because that was I
think we would have it was right in the
middle of that side of it all right so
we are getting down to the end of this
season so let's say we've got basically
got two more topics we want to cover
before we wrap this sucker up do we have
something we
haven't thrown out yet that we want to
um let's see is there anything you have
off the top of your head while we're I'm
digging a little bit
here let's see
I don't think taxes are a good one
because this is the developer Journey
not the business setting up a
business had lots of tax questions this
week I was uh reconciling my
books now that you know what that
actually would be sort of
a I don't think tax questions but we
could
[Music]
do
um like keeping track of your business
basically that could like you know
accounting types of things and stuff
like that working on your business not
in your business this is really on your
business well this is actually like this
is this is like working on your business
but this is actually behind the scenes
because working on your business I
typically think of as more like uh
marketing and stuff like this um this is
a little bit this is working in the
business but behind the scenes this is a
non-billable working in the business so
it's the things like accounting and
actually I think accounting invoicing
and billing because I don't think we've
really talked about
that um I'm sorry this go well with the
pricing one we did so yeah I like that
so let's yeah because I don't think
we've actually talked about the actual
invoicing side of it or anything like
that and and I know we've talked about
pricing but we didn't really get into
that so let's go with invoicing for this
one or invo we'll go into accounting and
we'll hope people don't fall asleep and
we'll see how that goes so all right
that's where we're going to start with
do I want to now I'll go I was trying to
St I wanted to grab a hat real quick but
because I'm like shining a little too
much a little too little too Holy Roller
right now with this little this nice
little bright glow going on so you guys
get the special version this time well
hello and welcome back we are continuing
the developer Journey we are building
better developers it is developing newer
we are cranking through this season
almost there I happen to be Rob
Broadhead one of the founders of
developing building better developers
also a founder of RB Consulting where we
do software Consulting business
Consulting we look at ways to simplify
automate and integrate your systems so
that your technology sprawl and all of
the related pain can be removed and
reduced as you get a nice you know
instead of being in that stinky smelly
car going down the road that's about to
fall apart we're going to put that stuff
back together and get you in that like
you know F1 Formula racer kind of thing
good thing bad bad thing uh let's see
thing I think I wow I'm trying to think
out if I I've talked about this last
time oh so get I'll start with the good
one and then I'll just flip into good
thing and you guys can look into this
there's a whole bunch of stuff my son's
giv me some information there's a bunch
of stuff going around there's stuff
dealing with Adobe and their uh Creative
Cloud and some of their subscriptions
and stuff like that well one of the
things that I got the other day was
something that said hey we can you can
flip your subscription which I happen to
have been a subscriber for a long time
for a bunch of different stuff
like hey you can flip your subscription
to this other thing that's 50% less and
it's actually it's not quite the same
stuff that was the other one had but
it's a it's actually a better fit to me
I was actually just digging I was just
looking you know the other day I was
starting to look through that a little
bit and say ah there's a lot of stuff I
don't use so good thing is I get what I
need essentially all the same stuff I
need for half the price each month bad
thing along the same lines is I've been
doing some Financial straightening stuff
out and things like that and uh there's
like it's one of those it's like
automation is really nice for financial
stuff it's just like pay your bills
online do this do that just don't even
think about it it is also a real pain
when you let it just go for too long and
now you got to like roll it all back and
clean it all up and figure out how you
had I literally am financially
technology sprawl I have too many places
too many things going on all these
little deals I took advantage of and all
this crap that is now it's like it
wasn't probably worth the deal so it's
like no simplify it all right back
integrate stuff I'm going to get like
you know nice little pipeline of money
coming in money going out so I don't
have to look a thousand different places
so there's some good and some bad right
there and it may actually have something
to do with our topic today but I'm gonna
hold on because I want you guys hold
your breath and let Michael introduce
himself go for
it hey everyone my name is mikaeel Mage
I'm one of the co-founders of developer
ner building other developers I'm also
the founder of Envision QA where we help
small to midsize businesses analyze
their software stack look at what their
business needs are and build the right
software tool for their needs good and
bad this week uh the I'll start with the
bad went out bought some TV antennas
because my wife loves NASCAR and uh
Infinity Series has decided to move
everything over to CW which is only
available over the air or on Hulu live
um
could not get that to work so spent $300
per antennas had to take it all back and
then had to go subscribe for Hulu live
uh tried YouTube TV and found out we're
in the zone that is blacked out for
YouTube TV the only source was Hulu live
so my TV build just doubled again uh
gota love this uh the good is I've been
using this free financial tool called
wave apps for many many years to do my
financial bookkeeping for my company
books recently they changed their tears
and things got a little funky today I
figured out how to get everything the
way I wanted it like I used to so now
I'm able to continue to use the tool did
not have to go buy QuickBooks thank God
uh and I'm back to reconciling my books
which kind of leads into our topic today
wow we both had these you
know you know a little bit of a spoiler
alert or whatever but now we don't have
to worry about spoiling it because now
it ish we're serving this right on front
in front of everybody on the table we're
going to talk about the accounting side
of your side hustle of your business
really going to get we've talked about
pricing which is really not the
accounting side we're going to talk
about invoicing and billing and some of
those kinds of things now Michael let us
he'll give me like a nice little starter
thing was he mentioned the the qword
QuickBooks whether you use QuickBooks or
F books or all the other tools out there
the first thing is i' highly highly
highly recommend that you pick a a tool
that you used for your side hustle for
keeping track of all of your
transactions separate from just like
we've mentioned before you should have
when you're starting a business have a
separate account there should be a
straight business account period that's
like it's not your extra checkin account
or your other savings account or a
credit card that you're just like I'm
just going to call that my business
expenses now maybe you put your business
expenses on that but there should be
somewhere a checking account literally a
checking account that is tied to your
business that you drive everything
through
that that is going to be key now as part
of that you should have a some sort of
accounting software that you can use
that is tied to that or that tracks that
so you can I don't know keep track of
your bottom line but also what you're
going to need depending on where you're
at at the very least you're going to
need to be able to some sort sort of
billing and invoicing some sort of
reports related to that reports related
to your income and expense your your
your final year stuff filing taxes
potentially quarterly taxes if you need
to do that and maybe even payroll so
find a tool that is comfortable for you
like Michael said he's like he has been
in Wave Accounting forever and to change
that would be a pain not only for him as
a US user but also because then he's got
to move all the data and make sure that
it moves right and all that kind of crap
nobody trust me you don't want to have
to jump to a whole different system
really ever and in any situation this is
like across the board basically
something you don't want to do it's it's
not pretty so when you look at a tool
take a look at where it can grow because
that's something you don't want to jump
into and a lot of people do this they
jump into some like you know free little
app that does something super simple for
them and it's cheap or like I said cheap
or free like okay cool this will cover
me right now and then six months or a
year from now it doesn't cover them
anymore because now suddenly instead of
something that only you know that is
great for having five customers doesn't
work when you have 500 customers or it
doesn't expand to having to track
expenses from different places or the
number of venders that you have or or
the it gets into like I don't want you
guys to fall asleep talking about
accounting stuff but like
classifications and things like that
that you have to worry about including
one of the big things you're going to
find across the board is does it have
any integration with you know electronic
integration with like your bank accounts
or other places like that including
electronic filing of taxes which is
required in some cases and in some
certain places so the other piece is the
ability to calculate or file taxes for
you and this is not just your year in
taxes it could be at other levels and
then payroll is another big thing
actually the fourth big thing that is
probably more important than all of
those that a lot of these tools have
some uh they will work with you on it is
the ability to actually take payments
now you may have a square account or
something like that where you can run
everything through it but there are
accounting software options out there
where they also have either directly or
as part of an add-on the ability to take
payments whether it's you know through
like credit cards or some I think even
have the ability to set up a and some
things like that so that's something you
need to think about I want us before I
pass it over the mic though I also want
to talk about the billing and invoicing
side of it we've talked about rates this
is
about frequency and
professionalism now you can charge
whatever it is let's just say you're you
you're a nice little developer and you
charge 50 bucks an hour and we're GNA
we'll take two different let's say you
you're charging 50 bucks an hour and at
the end of a week you did 20 hours of
work and you want to go Bill them for
the Thousand or 20 time 5050 is a th000
just quick math three people or let's
say that you had a thousand project that
you build them for like hey I I we
agreed it's going to be a thousand
project boom I'm going to go ahead and
bill you for it now we have mentioned uh
upwork and Guru and some of these other
sites they a lot of times will help you
with that piece of it they do include in
their offerings and things like that
sometimes a level of invoice in and
billing and things of that nature so
this may you may be able to take that
off the table but let's assume for this
for this exercise that you haven't that
you actually do need to send an invoice
and I have had people work for me at
times where it has been like pulling
teeth to get them to send me an invoice
so I can say yes this is the work that
came in and I can tie it to a check
because I actually have proper
accounting principles of some sort as
much as I can being not an encounter so
what you will need to do sometimes
you'll do things like POS and things
like that so talk to your customer you
should always have something and you you
may be asked by the qu customer how do
you handle billing so with that question
it's going to be how frequently do you
send one do you s do you send them an
invoice every month do you send them
every week every two weeks bi-weekly
15th in the end of the month whatever
and a lot of times that is it's up to
you it's how you build now realize that
if you wanted to build
every week they may or may not pay those
off every week they may just like you
know a month later pay off three of them
at once and you get a check and you have
to go back and track all of those so the
B the granularity of your billing is how
you do stuff and they just need to know
that hey I'm going to send you an
invoice every so these on this
schedule and then follow up it's just
like we talked about podcasts and blogs
and things like that you like you need
to be scheduled now you don't have to
send it at 5:00 a.m. every Tuesday or
something like that but what you do need
to do is do it like if you say it's
every other week and I send it to end of
the week every other week you need to
make sure that you send it the end of
the week every other week that that they
need to understand when to expect it and
then as part of that there's also like
what are the terms which are basically
how soon do you expect that to be paid
which is critical because if you don't
mention anything you don't know you're
it's up to that customer and it could be
some places will wait 90 days or more to
pay a bill that may be a problem for you
particularly if this is more than a side
hustle and you need to like put food on
your table now it can go as low as like
some places like immediately or you know
maybe seven days later or two within two
weeks or something like that make sure
you were clear on all of those kinds of
things this thing these things I'm
talking about like how often you going
to Bill them what is the expectation for
payments and make sure that you are
clear on that before you go into
especially a longer term kind of project
it's a oneandone it's probably not going
to be as big a deal but it could be and
definitely if it's going to be something
where you're going to get into a three
or six or 12 month agreement make sure
that you are very clear on that I will
pause there and pass it over to Mike and
see what are your thoughts on this and
maybe questions and and some you know
hints that you may have for
people yeah so I know I initially in our
introduction started talking about the
QuickBooks and waves there are other
ways you can keep track of your books
even if you're just starting out you
need to record everything so when I went
through the whole rebranding process and
relaunching process I actually was
having to keep two separate books
because I still had the old company that
was being phased out and had to reset
and create a new Ledger for the new
company except since the new company
didn't exist yet it really didn't make
sense to go out and spend a lot of money
on expensive software to set up a new
Ledger
ironically typically all a ledger is is
a spreadsheet so you can go get open
Office lead braate if you have Excel use
Excel just keep track of the what you're
spending what's coming in what's going
out initially and then as you need to
evolve the business you move into other
applications like wave apps or you know
free books QuickBooks
whatever as you're going through this
process like Rob mentioned you know we
also want to invoice our customers we
want to send out those nice pretty
invoices well what he didn't mention is
yes you can go get those other tools but
here again you can use free tools for
the process tools like Pages uh word
open Office a lot of these have good
free templates for invoicing just go hey
find a template I want invoices and then
go pick one that works for you and just
drop it in there add a logo you're done
minutes worth of time does not take that
long it may seem daunting at first but
once you get it done right it's pretty
much copy paste move on but make sure
you record those payments into your
Ledger you don't want to not get paid on
top of that though as you're going
through this process of working the
business you need to keep track of those
bank accounts you want to make sure you
reconcile your income and your expenses
with your Ledger cuz sometimes you may
have those odd payments like I did
initially where everything was on a
personal credit card because the
business account didn't exist yet I was
still going through the process of
getting the LLC the escorp so I didn't
really have the tax ID and all that to
go just go set up up business account
well also and lesson learn is I got
hacked again a month ago on my business
account for some strange reason because
I don't use the card for
anything use you you want a credit card
or a business card to charge those ex
external expenses to because if
something does happen you don't want to
tie up your physical money while you're
trying to reconcile any grievances or
misch charges so you do still need to
keep track of where are you spending
money outside of your business checking
because if you don't and you don't see
it on your Ledger you're going to forget
to put it in there and not pay yourself
so you're going to go pay for something
and not get
deducted ran into that in recently
because I had those weird charges I had
to go literally like Rob mention with
his subscriptions I had to go through a
whole bunch of different websites to say
okay did I buy this did I buy
this I had it all written down but it's
like where did these weird charges come
from ultimately they weren't mine um so
it's one of those things it it's tedious
but if you stay on top of this it's
going to be easy year now the bad thing
I
did and you know a lot of business
owners do this we are reluctant to work
in the business a lot it's because
really working on the business you know
that's where we get paid that's where we
make the money working in the business
we're not really getting paid we're not
we we're doing things that we don't feel
is as productive because we're not
getting paid for but it does make a
difference because if you aren't keeping
an eye on those accounts something weird
like a miscellaneous charge could come
in and then you don't catch it well
someone could essentially come in drain
your account and then you're like whoa
what happened um so kind of following up
on your accounts at least once a week
don't necessarily have to do it daily
but I find at least once a week take a
snapshot of your Ledger your bank
account compare the two do some
reconciliation if you're be if you're a
very active business or a very active
side hustle yes this may take a little
bit of time
but if you buy the right tools like
QuickBooks or some of these other tools
they'll help you Auto reconcile with
your bank accounts like Rob
mentioned so these are just some of the
things you can do for working in the
business to make life a little bit
easier
now I'm not a huge fan like I said of
always working in the business but we do
need to
so kind of check yourself and make sure
that at least once a week maybe do a
reminder and say hey have I reconciled
my books have I sent those invoices have
I followed up to make sure I got paid
because the other thing you have to do
is you need to make sure that those
invoices you sent out that your
customers are paying you you don't want
to work for free you don't want to be
five six invoices in on a customer and
find out they're not paying you well why
are you still doing the work for them so
again this is just some of the things to
do to help you kind of keep your books
in order and keep your business running
smoothly
yeah I think there's some good examples
there one is use template it is very
helpful to use templates wherever
possible you don't have to reinvent the
wheel there have been a billion bills
and invoices done over the years so just
find find something that looks good for
you and you don't need to get it super
fancy but you can put something together
like Michael said you can find a really
good template put a logo on there you're
off and running you don't have to worry
about
it ret tracking invoices and payments is
very critical I still and I will have
customers that I've had for a long time
will regularly have stuff where I will
send stuff out for example let's say I'm
sending things out every two weeks but
they I know from how they do stuff they
roughly pay once a month there are times
that I will look and I'll say okay this
is what I'm expecting and they'll pay an
invoice or two and there's an older
invoice that didn't get hit and I'm like
well wait a minute that to me is like a
red flag that you didn't pay this older
invoice so did it get lost and usually
I'm I'm usually very helpful and say by
the way here is that older invoice just
to be sure and there are a lot of things
where it's like like I've got one right
now that I hate to call somebody out but
literally gotta hey I'm putting the
check in the mail today like a week ago
and I haven't seen the check yet and so
I'm gonna look and see what it comes in
the mail tomorrow and if not if I don't
see it I'm gonna be like hey you said
the check is in the mail did that
actually get into the mail because also
now this is like one of those thing and
this is actually I think sometimes a
problem for your customer too is if you
do this and like oh I didn't catch it
and now they're like for this case now
they've got two invoices and they're
like you know there there's more that
they need to put out right now to pay
out than maybe they were expecting
because maybe they weren't paying
attention to what they needed to do as
well obviously they weren't because
normally they should expect that oh I'm
going to pay $1,000 do out to this
vendor let's say and if you don't that
month usually are going to say hey did
you forget to invoice me which I have
seen that a couple of times before as
well and you don't want to say oh yeah I
forgot to invoice you because you just
don't sound as professional you are
better off I have found going through
this stuff being follow up on it is do
the regular follow-ups based follow-ups
based on your agreements and things like
that you don't have to hound them you
don't have to like send them off to
collections or send cousin veto over
there to like you know smash their their
kneecaps but you do want to stay on top
of it and there is a point like Michael
said and I have literally early on got
into a situation where they kept saying
yep we'll get it we'll get it we'll get
it we'll get it we'll get it and I
suddenly had three months of work that
was not paid and I was like I have to
stop I was like I love working for you
guys I love the rate and everything else
I was like but I can't afford to wait
continue to wait for you guys to
actually pay me and when they did it was
all kinds of issues because I got all
this money at once from you know three
months and had to deal with everything
so be sure that you're keeping on it
that you're you know you're pushing with
them and I was and so it's also have in
the back of your mind like in some of
those cases some sort of a a threshold
it's like if I get to this point and
they're still not an giving me the
answers I need I.E a check or a payment
into my account then you need to say hey
we have gone beyond what I'm comfortable
with and early on with a new customer
particularly all just say I I'm sorry
but trust but verify just I haven't
worked with you nothing personal this is
just business this is how we do it and
follow that stuff up because yes as you
get further in and you know a customer
then it's a little easier and you just
sort of things start to flow but early
on you want to make sure that all of
those things that you communicated are
followed through
on that being said one of the things
that we have communicated over and over
and over and over again is to send us an
email at info@ developer
please give us some feedback because
especially now as we're wrapping up one
season and we're going to go into the
next season the next season is going to
be regular nuggets of information and
and action items and challenges and
things like that to really build better
developers to talk about how do we build
better developers including ourselves
there's a lot of these if not all of
them that we will be part of these
challenges that we are going to put out
and these you know these Lessons Learned
in these ways that we can better so we
would love to have from you options to
that as say what are some of your
opinions what are some suggestions that
you have particularly what are the some
of the things that you do on a regular
basis to keep yourself current or make
yourself better because we all have them
particularly as we get further into our
careers once you get through those first
few years where you're just drinking
from a fire hose all the time there is
that point where you're like okay I'm
ready now to like control my own destiny
a little bit and now you have to push
yourself you have to go find the ways
that you're going to grow to get to
where you want to be that being said
hang out with us and continue to grow
with us to listen to this podcast to
give us feedback wherever you can and we
would love to hear from you as we're
wrapping this one up but for now go out
there and have yourself a great day a
great week and we will talk to you next
time bonus
material so one of the things you me
mention which I think is kind of a
really good bonus topic is you were
talking about you know it took 3 months
to finally get that check or payments in
and then you had to go reconcile and
everything for those of you just
starting out or having a side hustle or
just want to avoid fees one of the
things that I have found recently is
most banks now use or accept zilly pay
where you can actually pay a customer or
a an expense straight from your business
account to a another customer's bank
account so you don't even have to cut
the check you literally can do an
electronic transfer from your account to
their account with no fees so that's one
way to get paid sooner or pay some of
your customers sooner without fees some
of the other things is you can get a
commercial account through your bank to
accept credit cards at a low interest
rate you can take Vimeo you can do um
what we pay there are other apps out
there to get payments quickly without
having to to go through all the hoops
and hoopla but at the end of the day you
want to get paid for your skills so try
to set up tools and reminders to help
the process so if you send out an
invoice and the customer gets it and
they it's not due for 30 days so it may
sit there for 30 days some apps like
QuickBooks wave apps will allow you to
set up send a reminder seven days before
the payments due one day before the
payments due one day after the payment
and so on what's cool about those is
they'll also send it to your email so
you'll get a notification as well oh hey
you haven't been paid yet follow up with
the customer so use software and
automation to help streamline these
tools to quick things um one
is take a look when you get paid you
will get paid different ways and take a
look at when you do get paid because
some of these are using Services much
like Michael referred to a lot of them
the way they're set up is that you can
get paid in you know 5 days or a
week whatever the full amount is or you
can you can pay a fee and get it
immediately and you don't want to you
know get it you don't want to do the get
it immediately because it's going to
cost yeah it's usually going to be like
1% which is not a lot but it's something
to note that if you are pressed for cash
or you know you get into a cash flow
issue or something like that with your
business then a lot of times there is an
option to pull it in a little bit faster
so that you can pay your
bills the other thing is when you're
sending when you're sending bills when
you're sending
invoices a way that I found is really
good is I've talked before about doing
regular statuses I do a weekly status
typically I bill every other week which
works out great because what happens is
that Weekly status will go hit their
email and then basically five minutes
later I will send the invoice for the
last couple of weeks and say Hey by the
way here's your latest invoice and or
here's your latest invoice and the three
others you haven't paid yet let me know
if you have any questions blah blah blah
you know that kind of stuff have a good
week you know it's that kind of stuff
here's a bill enjoy your week so do you
can always like you know sort of put
good news and bad news together in that
little you know in a couple of emails I
would not oh rap sort of a follow-up to
that do not put the invoice if you if
you have something like that where
you're emailing
communication do a separate email for
the invoice it is way too easy if you
include it with something else that it
gets put somewhere it doesn't it gets
lost or something like that always do a
separate email and if you have to follow
up you can go back and do a reply with
that or a forward or whatever you need
to from that email and that will help
you out quite a bit what will also help
you out quite a bit is US wrapping this
one up so we're going to wrap up this
episode we will come back next time it
will actually be our pin ultimate I
think it is pin ultimate uh episode
because we're going to do that one and
we're going to come up with the season
wrap up and then we will jump into
season
23 so crazy I'm still like a little bit
like rocked by that it's like that's a
lot like I said that's like I think
that's 10 twice the the 10 episodes that
most podcasts last in Seasons not in
episodes so go out there and have
yourself a good one as always leave us
comments leave us you know email for uh
contact us form out at RB at developin
or.com obviously I've it's gone on too
long so go have yourself a good one and
we'll talk to you next time

cloud and here we are as I'm aligning

31.8

all of my stuff up so I can sort of look

35.32

at the camera gosh I got like all kinds

37.8

of I'm a little glowy today this is like

40.16

pretty cool I guess Angelic let's see

43.48

let's swing that mic there do that how

46.84

do everybody what was that mute your

50.199

notifications mute my notifications yes

52.879

because those things drive me nuts it

55.92

said let's see let's make it sure okay

58.239

wow I had my I've had my do not disturb

60.32

this is interesting I've had my do not

62.079

disturb on I think since the last time

64.76

we met and yet I still get stuff

68.2

so ah let's see let's try for one hour

71.159

let's try that or maybe it just oh I

73.68

think what I did is it

75.4

just we're gonna find out I don't think

79

I think I gotta work on that because I

80.64

think my notifications are coming in

82

when they shouldn't and I gotta go

83.36

figure out what it what is overright

86.68

yeah do not disturb on okay we're going

88.759

to find out if if you hear a bunch of

90.64

beeps I'll cuss we may edit it out we

94.32

may not I can't I don't know did you

95.68

edit that out last time or did we keep

97.159

that in no I took

99

it it was a little longer than I liked

102.92

so I just ch chopped it so you guys

105.399

missed out there you go you missed out

106.92

on some really good like behind the

109

scenes stuff but oh well actually so did

111.52

the podcast people because that was I

113.68

think we would have it was right in the

114.84

middle of that side of it all right so

117.799

we are getting down to the end of this

120.84

season so let's say we've got basically

124.24

got two more topics we want to cover

128.08

before we wrap this sucker up do we have

131.52

something we

132.92

haven't thrown out yet that we want to

137.44

um let's see is there anything you have

139.72

off the top of your head while we're I'm

141.12

digging a little bit

147.519

here let's see

151

I don't think taxes are a good one

153.12

because this is the developer Journey

154.76

not the business setting up a

159.84

business had lots of tax questions this

162.239

week I was uh reconciling my

164.92

books now that you know what that

167.159

actually would be sort of

168.8

a I don't think tax questions but we

172.04

could

172.34

[Music]

173.64

do

175.64

um like keeping track of your business

178.959

basically that could like you know

181

accounting types of things and stuff

183.04

like that working on your business not

186.239

in your business this is really on your

188.319

business well this is actually like this

190.48

is this is like working on your business

192.92

but this is actually behind the scenes

194.2

because working on your business I

195.28

typically think of as more like uh

197.68

marketing and stuff like this um this is

200.64

a little bit this is working in the

202

business but behind the scenes this is a

203.799

non-billable working in the business so

205.64

it's the things like accounting and

209.519

actually I think accounting invoicing

211.08

and billing because I don't think we've

212.4

really talked about

214.4

that um I'm sorry this go well with the

217.36

pricing one we did so yeah I like that

221.28

so let's yeah because I don't think

222.519

we've actually talked about the actual

223.799

invoicing side of it or anything like

225.56

that and and I know we've talked about

227.84

pricing but we didn't really get into

229

that so let's go with invoicing for this

230.56

one or invo we'll go into accounting and

233.48

we'll hope people don't fall asleep and

235.079

we'll see how that goes so all right

237

that's where we're going to start with

238.04

do I want to now I'll go I was trying to

241.04

St I wanted to grab a hat real quick but

243.319

because I'm like shining a little too

244.64

much a little too little too Holy Roller

247.48

right now with this little this nice

248.76

little bright glow going on so you guys

250.84

get the special version this time well

253.76

hello and welcome back we are continuing

256.4

the developer Journey we are building

259

better developers it is developing newer

261.479

we are cranking through this season

263.08

almost there I happen to be Rob

264.96

Broadhead one of the founders of

266.56

developing building better developers

268.6

also a founder of RB Consulting where we

271

do software Consulting business

273.12

Consulting we look at ways to simplify

275.72

automate and integrate your systems so

278.44

that your technology sprawl and all of

280.44

the related pain can be removed and

282.919

reduced as you get a nice you know

285.039

instead of being in that stinky smelly

286.88

car going down the road that's about to

288.32

fall apart we're going to put that stuff

289.759

back together and get you in that like

291.479

you know F1 Formula racer kind of thing

294.479

good thing bad bad thing uh let's see

299.88

thing I think I wow I'm trying to think

301.84

out if I I've talked about this last

303.8

time oh so get I'll start with the good

305.4

one and then I'll just flip into good

307.24

thing and you guys can look into this

309.479

there's a whole bunch of stuff my son's

311.52

giv me some information there's a bunch

312.84

of stuff going around there's stuff

315.28

dealing with Adobe and their uh Creative

318.72

Cloud and some of their subscriptions

320.36

and stuff like that well one of the

322.319

things that I got the other day was

323.68

something that said hey we can you can

325.68

flip your subscription which I happen to

327.36

have been a subscriber for a long time

328.759

for a bunch of different stuff

330.28

like hey you can flip your subscription

331.84

to this other thing that's 50% less and

335.44

it's actually it's not quite the same

337.24

stuff that was the other one had but

338.8

it's a it's actually a better fit to me

341

I was actually just digging I was just

342.919

looking you know the other day I was

345.36

starting to look through that a little

346.4

bit and say ah there's a lot of stuff I

347.56

don't use so good thing is I get what I

350.199

need essentially all the same stuff I

352.28

need for half the price each month bad

355.16

thing along the same lines is I've been

358.08

doing some Financial straightening stuff

360.319

out and things like that and uh there's

363.28

like it's one of those it's like

364.919

automation is really nice for financial

367.639

stuff it's just like pay your bills

368.88

online do this do that just don't even

370.84

think about it it is also a real pain

373.52

when you let it just go for too long and

375.479

now you got to like roll it all back and

377.12

clean it all up and figure out how you

379.72

had I literally am financially

382.319

technology sprawl I have too many places

385.319

too many things going on all these

387.4

little deals I took advantage of and all

389.28

this crap that is now it's like it

391.199

wasn't probably worth the deal so it's

393.319

like no simplify it all right back

395.68

integrate stuff I'm going to get like

397.12

you know nice little pipeline of money

399.24

coming in money going out so I don't

400.919

have to look a thousand different places

402.8

so there's some good and some bad right

404.199

there and it may actually have something

406.599

to do with our topic today but I'm gonna

408.56

hold on because I want you guys hold

410.44

your breath and let Michael introduce

412.44

himself go for

414.36

it hey everyone my name is mikaeel Mage

417.36

I'm one of the co-founders of developer

418.919

ner building other developers I'm also

420.96

the founder of Envision QA where we help

423.24

small to midsize businesses analyze

425.52

their software stack look at what their

427.4

business needs are and build the right

429.479

software tool for their needs good and

431.96

bad this week uh the I'll start with the

434.16

bad went out bought some TV antennas

438.28

because my wife loves NASCAR and uh

441.36

Infinity Series has decided to move

443.16

everything over to CW which is only

445.479

available over the air or on Hulu live

449.319

um

450.4

could not get that to work so spent $300

452.479

per antennas had to take it all back and

454.4

then had to go subscribe for Hulu live

457.8

uh tried YouTube TV and found out we're

459.72

in the zone that is blacked out for

461.199

YouTube TV the only source was Hulu live

465.039

so my TV build just doubled again uh

469.599

gota love this uh the good is I've been

474

using this free financial tool called

476.159

wave apps for many many years to do my

479.68

financial bookkeeping for my company

482.44

books recently they changed their tears

485.24

and things got a little funky today I

487.759

figured out how to get everything the

489.199

way I wanted it like I used to so now

491.599

I'm able to continue to use the tool did

493.479

not have to go buy QuickBooks thank God

496.24

uh and I'm back to reconciling my books

498.599

which kind of leads into our topic today

501.4

wow we both had these you

503.599

know you know a little bit of a spoiler

505.759

alert or whatever but now we don't have

507.599

to worry about spoiling it because now

508.879

it ish we're serving this right on front

511.319

in front of everybody on the table we're

513.12

going to talk about the accounting side

516.519

of your side hustle of your business

518.76

really going to get we've talked about

520.24

pricing which is really not the

522.479

accounting side we're going to talk

523.68

about invoicing and billing and some of

526

those kinds of things now Michael let us

528.2

he'll give me like a nice little starter

530.399

thing was he mentioned the the qword

533.68

QuickBooks whether you use QuickBooks or

535.88

F books or all the other tools out there

539.92

the first thing is i' highly highly

542.2

highly recommend that you pick a a tool

545.399

that you used for your side hustle for

547.6

keeping track of all of your

550.76

transactions separate from just like

552.959

we've mentioned before you should have

554.44

when you're starting a business have a

556.2

separate account there should be a

557.64

straight business account period that's

560.279

like it's not your extra checkin account

562.88

or your other savings account or a

565.279

credit card that you're just like I'm

566.56

just going to call that my business

567.959

expenses now maybe you put your business

569.959

expenses on that but there should be

572.079

somewhere a checking account literally a

575.399

checking account that is tied to your

577.519

business that you drive everything

580

through

580.92

that that is going to be key now as part

584.04

of that you should have a some sort of

586.72

accounting software that you can use

588.76

that is tied to that or that tracks that

591.36

so you can I don't know keep track of

593.279

your bottom line but also what you're

595.36

going to need depending on where you're

597.04

at at the very least you're going to

598.6

need to be able to some sort sort of

600.44

billing and invoicing some sort of

602.519

reports related to that reports related

604.56

to your income and expense your your

607.72

your final year stuff filing taxes

610.959

potentially quarterly taxes if you need

612.88

to do that and maybe even payroll so

617.16

find a tool that is comfortable for you

621.04

like Michael said he's like he has been

622.76

in Wave Accounting forever and to change

626.6

that would be a pain not only for him as

628.92

a US user but also because then he's got

631.44

to move all the data and make sure that

632.68

it moves right and all that kind of crap

634.959

nobody trust me you don't want to have

637.279

to jump to a whole different system

639.56

really ever and in any situation this is

641.639

like across the board basically

644.24

something you don't want to do it's it's

646.44

not pretty so when you look at a tool

650.839

take a look at where it can grow because

653.8

that's something you don't want to jump

655.12

into and a lot of people do this they

656.6

jump into some like you know free little

659.36

app that does something super simple for

662.24

them and it's cheap or like I said cheap

664.56

or free like okay cool this will cover

666.6

me right now and then six months or a

668.6

year from now it doesn't cover them

670.279

anymore because now suddenly instead of

671.959

something that only you know that is

673.839

great for having five customers doesn't

675.6

work when you have 500 customers or it

678.2

doesn't expand to having to track

681.04

expenses from different places or the

682.76

number of venders that you have or or

685.16

the it gets into like I don't want you

686.88

guys to fall asleep talking about

688.16

accounting stuff but like

689.32

classifications and things like that

690.76

that you have to worry about including

693.079

one of the big things you're going to

695.6

find across the board is does it have

697.88

any integration with you know electronic

700.079

integration with like your bank accounts

701.839

or other places like that including

703.92

electronic filing of taxes which is

705.959

required in some cases and in some

707.519

certain places so the other piece is the

710.399

ability to calculate or file taxes for

712.76

you and this is not just your year in

715.16

taxes it could be at other levels and

716.959

then payroll is another big thing

718.959

actually the fourth big thing that is

720.959

probably more important than all of

723.36

those that a lot of these tools have

725.6

some uh they will work with you on it is

728.36

the ability to actually take payments

730.76

now you may have a square account or

732.56

something like that where you can run

733.68

everything through it but there are

735.8

accounting software options out there

737.72

where they also have either directly or

740.6

as part of an add-on the ability to take

742.68

payments whether it's you know through

744

like credit cards or some I think even

746.36

have the ability to set up a and some

748.12

things like that so that's something you

749.72

need to think about I want us before I

752.48

pass it over the mic though I also want

753.6

to talk about the billing and invoicing

755.399

side of it we've talked about rates this

758.199

is

759

about frequency and

762.48

professionalism now you can charge

765.279

whatever it is let's just say you're you

766.959

you're a nice little developer and you

768.279

charge 50 bucks an hour and we're GNA

770.68

we'll take two different let's say you

771.88

you're charging 50 bucks an hour and at

773.399

the end of a week you did 20 hours of

775.24

work and you want to go Bill them for

777.279

the Thousand or 20 time 5050 is a th000

781.079

just quick math three people or let's

783.279

say that you had a thousand project that

785.199

you build them for like hey I I we

788.199

agreed it's going to be a thousand

789.8

project boom I'm going to go ahead and

791.279

bill you for it now we have mentioned uh

795.279

upwork and Guru and some of these other

797.92

sites they a lot of times will help you

801.399

with that piece of it they do include in

804.88

their offerings and things like that

807.399

sometimes a level of invoice in and

809.519

billing and things of that nature so

811.24

this may you may be able to take that

813.079

off the table but let's assume for this

815.199

for this exercise that you haven't that

818.16

you actually do need to send an invoice

821.16

and I have had people work for me at

822.56

times where it has been like pulling

824.68

teeth to get them to send me an invoice

827.12

so I can say yes this is the work that

829

came in and I can tie it to a check

830.959

because I actually have proper

832.68

accounting principles of some sort as

835.399

much as I can being not an encounter so

838.279

what you will need to do sometimes

839.48

you'll do things like POS and things

841.8

like that so talk to your customer you

844.199

should always have something and you you

845.88

may be asked by the qu customer how do

847.88

you handle billing so with that question

851.199

it's going to be how frequently do you

852.8

send one do you s do you send them an

856.24

invoice every month do you send them

857.8

every week every two weeks bi-weekly

860.079

15th in the end of the month whatever

862.72

and a lot of times that is it's up to

865.32

you it's how you build now realize that

868.24

if you wanted to build

870.519

every week they may or may not pay those

873.68

off every week they may just like you

876.199

know a month later pay off three of them

878.88

at once and you get a check and you have

880.199

to go back and track all of those so the

882.56

B the granularity of your billing is how

885.519

you do stuff and they just need to know

887.48

that hey I'm going to send you an

888.72

invoice every so these on this

891.44

schedule and then follow up it's just

894.199

like we talked about podcasts and blogs

895.88

and things like that you like you need

898.04

to be scheduled now you don't have to

899.48

send it at 5:00 a.m. every Tuesday or

901.8

something like that but what you do need

903.32

to do is do it like if you say it's

905.6

every other week and I send it to end of

907.24

the week every other week you need to

908.839

make sure that you send it the end of

910.16

the week every other week that that they

912.759

need to understand when to expect it and

915.72

then as part of that there's also like

917.399

what are the terms which are basically

919.56

how soon do you expect that to be paid

922.44

which is critical because if you don't

925.519

mention anything you don't know you're

927.839

it's up to that customer and it could be

930.279

some places will wait 90 days or more to

933.92

pay a bill that may be a problem for you

937.079

particularly if this is more than a side

939.079

hustle and you need to like put food on

940.759

your table now it can go as low as like

944.16

some places like immediately or you know

947.279

maybe seven days later or two within two

949.24

weeks or something like that make sure

951.72

you were clear on all of those kinds of

954.44

things this thing these things I'm

955.88

talking about like how often you going

956.959

to Bill them what is the expectation for

959.079

payments and make sure that you are

960.319

clear on that before you go into

963.519

especially a longer term kind of project

965.319

it's a oneandone it's probably not going

967.44

to be as big a deal but it could be and

971

definitely if it's going to be something

972.16

where you're going to get into a three

973.6

or six or 12 month agreement make sure

976.48

that you are very clear on that I will

978.519

pause there and pass it over to Mike and

980.72

see what are your thoughts on this and

982.68

maybe questions and and some you know

984.48

hints that you may have for

986.24

people yeah so I know I initially in our

989.759

introduction started talking about the

991.639

QuickBooks and waves there are other

994.319

ways you can keep track of your books

996.199

even if you're just starting out you

997.68

need to record everything so when I went

1000.16

through the whole rebranding process and

1001.88

relaunching process I actually was

1003.56

having to keep two separate books

1005.04

because I still had the old company that

1006.839

was being phased out and had to reset

1009.36

and create a new Ledger for the new

1011.199

company except since the new company

1013.16

didn't exist yet it really didn't make

1014.88

sense to go out and spend a lot of money

1016.6

on expensive software to set up a new

1021.199

Ledger

1023.12

ironically typically all a ledger is is

1026.679

a spreadsheet so you can go get open

1029

Office lead braate if you have Excel use

1032

Excel just keep track of the what you're

1036

spending what's coming in what's going

1037.64

out initially and then as you need to

1040.199

evolve the business you move into other

1042.24

applications like wave apps or you know

1044.52

free books QuickBooks

1047.079

whatever as you're going through this

1049.2

process like Rob mentioned you know we

1051.64

also want to invoice our customers we

1053.36

want to send out those nice pretty

1054.559

invoices well what he didn't mention is

1057.679

yes you can go get those other tools but

1059.36

here again you can use free tools for

1061.24

the process tools like Pages uh word

1066.32

open Office a lot of these have good

1068.799

free templates for invoicing just go hey

1072.4

find a template I want invoices and then

1074.4

go pick one that works for you and just

1076.32

drop it in there add a logo you're done

1078.84

minutes worth of time does not take that

1080.679

long it may seem daunting at first but

1082.88

once you get it done right it's pretty

1084.88

much copy paste move on but make sure

1087.36

you record those payments into your

1089.24

Ledger you don't want to not get paid on

1093.159

top of that though as you're going

1094.88

through this process of working the

1097.28

business you need to keep track of those

1101.4

bank accounts you want to make sure you

1102.88

reconcile your income and your expenses

1107.039

with your Ledger cuz sometimes you may

1109.32

have those odd payments like I did

1111.799

initially where everything was on a

1113.919

personal credit card because the

1115.159

business account didn't exist yet I was

1116.799

still going through the process of

1118

getting the LLC the escorp so I didn't

1121.32

really have the tax ID and all that to

1123.679

go just go set up up business account

1126.32

well also and lesson learn is I got

1129.96

hacked again a month ago on my business

1132.2

account for some strange reason because

1133.76

I don't use the card for

1136.36

anything use you you want a credit card

1140.88

or a business card to charge those ex

1144.28

external expenses to because if

1145.919

something does happen you don't want to

1147.6

tie up your physical money while you're

1150.44

trying to reconcile any grievances or

1153.64

misch charges so you do still need to

1156.72

keep track of where are you spending

1158.48

money outside of your business checking

1161.159

because if you don't and you don't see

1163.28

it on your Ledger you're going to forget

1164.52

to put it in there and not pay yourself

1166.24

so you're going to go pay for something

1168.08

and not get

1169.48

deducted ran into that in recently

1172.4

because I had those weird charges I had

1174.64

to go literally like Rob mention with

1177.72

his subscriptions I had to go through a

1179.919

whole bunch of different websites to say

1181.52

okay did I buy this did I buy

1183.52

this I had it all written down but it's

1186.039

like where did these weird charges come

1187.96

from ultimately they weren't mine um so

1191.159

it's one of those things it it's tedious

1194.679

but if you stay on top of this it's

1198

going to be easy year now the bad thing

1201.2

I

1202.28

did and you know a lot of business

1205.039

owners do this we are reluctant to work

1208

in the business a lot it's because

1210.36

really working on the business you know

1212.88

that's where we get paid that's where we

1214.159

make the money working in the business

1215.84

we're not really getting paid we're not

1217.96

we we're doing things that we don't feel

1220.32

is as productive because we're not

1222.159

getting paid for but it does make a

1225.44

difference because if you aren't keeping

1227.08

an eye on those accounts something weird

1229.2

like a miscellaneous charge could come

1230.96

in and then you don't catch it well

1232.799

someone could essentially come in drain

1234.12

your account and then you're like whoa

1235.4

what happened um so kind of following up

1238.28

on your accounts at least once a week

1240.28

don't necessarily have to do it daily

1241.72

but I find at least once a week take a

1245.84

snapshot of your Ledger your bank

1248.44

account compare the two do some

1250.84

reconciliation if you're be if you're a

1253.96

very active business or a very active

1255.72

side hustle yes this may take a little

1258

bit of time

1259.2

but if you buy the right tools like

1261.4

QuickBooks or some of these other tools

1263.039

they'll help you Auto reconcile with

1265.36

your bank accounts like Rob

1267.679

mentioned so these are just some of the

1270.159

things you can do for working in the

1272.279

business to make life a little bit

1274

easier

1276.88

now I'm not a huge fan like I said of

1280.12

always working in the business but we do

1281.96

need to

1284.24

so kind of check yourself and make sure

1287.2

that at least once a week maybe do a

1289.2

reminder and say hey have I reconciled

1292

my books have I sent those invoices have

1294.279

I followed up to make sure I got paid

1296.679

because the other thing you have to do

1298.4

is you need to make sure that those

1299.6

invoices you sent out that your

1301.52

customers are paying you you don't want

1303.36

to work for free you don't want to be

1306

five six invoices in on a customer and

1308.159

find out they're not paying you well why

1310.279

are you still doing the work for them so

1312.679

again this is just some of the things to

1314.12

do to help you kind of keep your books

1315.84

in order and keep your business running

1317.24

smoothly

1318.96

yeah I think there's some good examples

1320.32

there one is use template it is very

1324

helpful to use templates wherever

1325.36

possible you don't have to reinvent the

1326.96

wheel there have been a billion bills

1329.2

and invoices done over the years so just

1331.159

find find something that looks good for

1332.44

you and you don't need to get it super

1333.679

fancy but you can put something together

1335.24

like Michael said you can find a really

1336.32

good template put a logo on there you're

1338.12

off and running you don't have to worry

1339.48

about

1340.2

it ret tracking invoices and payments is

1343.799

very critical I still and I will have

1346.6

customers that I've had for a long time

1348.84

will regularly have stuff where I will

1351.6

send stuff out for example let's say I'm

1354.08

sending things out every two weeks but

1355.88

they I know from how they do stuff they

1358.2

roughly pay once a month there are times

1361.4

that I will look and I'll say okay this

1363.6

is what I'm expecting and they'll pay an

1365.6

invoice or two and there's an older

1367.4

invoice that didn't get hit and I'm like

1369.6

well wait a minute that to me is like a

1371.48

red flag that you didn't pay this older

1373.52

invoice so did it get lost and usually

1376.6

I'm I'm usually very helpful and say by

1378.279

the way here is that older invoice just

1381.2

to be sure and there are a lot of things

1383.2

where it's like like I've got one right

1384.96

now that I hate to call somebody out but

1388.6

literally gotta hey I'm putting the

1390.039

check in the mail today like a week ago

1392.52

and I haven't seen the check yet and so

1394.64

I'm gonna look and see what it comes in

1396.72

the mail tomorrow and if not if I don't

1399.039

see it I'm gonna be like hey you said

1400.52

the check is in the mail did that

1402.039

actually get into the mail because also

1404.559

now this is like one of those thing and

1405.96

this is actually I think sometimes a

1407.76

problem for your customer too is if you

1409.44

do this and like oh I didn't catch it

1411.72

and now they're like for this case now

1413.88

they've got two invoices and they're

1416.88

like you know there there's more that

1420.08

they need to put out right now to pay

1422.039

out than maybe they were expecting

1424.039

because maybe they weren't paying

1425.6

attention to what they needed to do as

1427.159

well obviously they weren't because

1429.039

normally they should expect that oh I'm

1430.919

going to pay $1,000 do out to this

1432.48

vendor let's say and if you don't that

1434.44

month usually are going to say hey did

1437.159

you forget to invoice me which I have

1439.64

seen that a couple of times before as

1441.48

well and you don't want to say oh yeah I

1444.52

forgot to invoice you because you just

1446.52

don't sound as professional you are

1448.64

better off I have found going through

1451.44

this stuff being follow up on it is do

1453.84

the regular follow-ups based follow-ups

1455.84

based on your agreements and things like

1457.88

that you don't have to hound them you

1458.96

don't have to like send them off to

1460.32

collections or send cousin veto over

1462.559

there to like you know smash their their

1464.76

kneecaps but you do want to stay on top

1467.6

of it and there is a point like Michael

1469.399

said and I have literally early on got

1471.36

into a situation where they kept saying

1473.76

yep we'll get it we'll get it we'll get

1475.08

it we'll get it we'll get it and I

1476.12

suddenly had three months of work that

1479.679

was not paid and I was like I have to

1483.559

stop I was like I love working for you

1485.96

guys I love the rate and everything else

1488.64

I was like but I can't afford to wait

1491.919

continue to wait for you guys to

1493.48

actually pay me and when they did it was

1495.76

all kinds of issues because I got all

1497.399

this money at once from you know three

1499.159

months and had to deal with everything

1502.08

so be sure that you're keeping on it

1504.96

that you're you know you're pushing with

1506.44

them and I was and so it's also have in

1508.96

the back of your mind like in some of

1510.2

those cases some sort of a a threshold

1513.039

it's like if I get to this point and

1514.279

they're still not an giving me the

1516.159

answers I need I.E a check or a payment

1520.159

into my account then you need to say hey

1522.679

we have gone beyond what I'm comfortable

1525.12

with and early on with a new customer

1527.72

particularly all just say I I'm sorry

1531.36

but trust but verify just I haven't

1533.48

worked with you nothing personal this is

1535.24

just business this is how we do it and

1537.2

follow that stuff up because yes as you

1539.64

get further in and you know a customer

1541.2

then it's a little easier and you just

1542.48

sort of things start to flow but early

1544.52

on you want to make sure that all of

1547.039

those things that you communicated are

1549

followed through

1550.72

on that being said one of the things

1553.72

that we have communicated over and over

1555.279

and over and over again is to send us an

1556.84

email at info@ developer

1559.64

please give us some feedback because

1561.84

especially now as we're wrapping up one

1563.88

season and we're going to go into the

1565.559

next season the next season is going to

1567.32

be regular nuggets of information and

1570.76

and action items and challenges and

1572.44

things like that to really build better

1575.2

developers to talk about how do we build

1577.24

better developers including ourselves

1578.84

there's a lot of these if not all of

1580.48

them that we will be part of these

1582.679

challenges that we are going to put out

1584.96

and these you know these Lessons Learned

1586.799

in these ways that we can better so we

1589.48

would love to have from you options to

1592.88

that as say what are some of your

1594.039

opinions what are some suggestions that

1595.559

you have particularly what are the some

1598.039

of the things that you do on a regular

1600.039

basis to keep yourself current or make

1603.08

yourself better because we all have them

1605.64

particularly as we get further into our

1607.2

careers once you get through those first

1608.52

few years where you're just drinking

1610.24

from a fire hose all the time there is

1612.32

that point where you're like okay I'm

1613.96

ready now to like control my own destiny

1617.72

a little bit and now you have to push

1619.84

yourself you have to go find the ways

1622.08

that you're going to grow to get to

1623.6

where you want to be that being said

1626.96

hang out with us and continue to grow

1628.76

with us to listen to this podcast to

1630.84

give us feedback wherever you can and we

1633.279

would love to hear from you as we're

1635

wrapping this one up but for now go out

1637.48

there and have yourself a great day a

1639.36

great week and we will talk to you next

1643.36

time bonus

1645.72

material so one of the things you me

1648.159

mention which I think is kind of a

1649.799

really good bonus topic is you were

1652.399

talking about you know it took 3 months

1655.52

to finally get that check or payments in

1657.6

and then you had to go reconcile and

1658.88

everything for those of you just

1660.799

starting out or having a side hustle or

1662.679

just want to avoid fees one of the

1665.64

things that I have found recently is

1667.679

most banks now use or accept zilly pay

1672.64

where you can actually pay a customer or

1675.24

a an expense straight from your business

1677.44

account to a another customer's bank

1679.279

account so you don't even have to cut

1680.84

the check you literally can do an

1681.96

electronic transfer from your account to

1684.08

their account with no fees so that's one

1686.48

way to get paid sooner or pay some of

1689

your customers sooner without fees some

1692.08

of the other things is you can get a

1693.84

commercial account through your bank to

1695.84

accept credit cards at a low interest

1698.159

rate you can take Vimeo you can do um

1701.919

what we pay there are other apps out

1704.24

there to get payments quickly without

1707.799

having to to go through all the hoops

1709.799

and hoopla but at the end of the day you

1712.72

want to get paid for your skills so try

1715.2

to set up tools and reminders to help

1720.159

the process so if you send out an

1721.799

invoice and the customer gets it and

1724.48

they it's not due for 30 days so it may

1727.2

sit there for 30 days some apps like

1729.919

QuickBooks wave apps will allow you to

1732.84

set up send a reminder seven days before

1734.919

the payments due one day before the

1736.44

payments due one day after the payment

1738.159

and so on what's cool about those is

1740.48

they'll also send it to your email so

1742.399

you'll get a notification as well oh hey

1744.76

you haven't been paid yet follow up with

1747.279

the customer so use software and

1750.399

automation to help streamline these

1752.6

tools to quick things um one

1757.48

is take a look when you get paid you

1759.96

will get paid different ways and take a

1761.88

look at when you do get paid because

1763.399

some of these are using Services much

1765.96

like Michael referred to a lot of them

1768.519

the way they're set up is that you can

1770.2

get paid in you know 5 days or a

1773.799

week whatever the full amount is or you

1777.159

can you can pay a fee and get it

1780.2

immediately and you don't want to you

1782.96

know get it you don't want to do the get

1784.799

it immediately because it's going to

1785.919

cost yeah it's usually going to be like

1786.96

1% which is not a lot but it's something

1789.6

to note that if you are pressed for cash

1792.6

or you know you get into a cash flow

1793.919

issue or something like that with your

1794.88

business then a lot of times there is an

1797.039

option to pull it in a little bit faster

1799.36

so that you can pay your

1801.88

bills the other thing is when you're

1804.72

sending when you're sending bills when

1807.12

you're sending

1808.2

invoices a way that I found is really

1810.519

good is I've talked before about doing

1812.24

regular statuses I do a weekly status

1814.76

typically I bill every other week which

1817.24

works out great because what happens is

1819.519

that Weekly status will go hit their

1821.399

email and then basically five minutes

1823.76

later I will send the invoice for the

1825.559

last couple of weeks and say Hey by the

1828.12

way here's your latest invoice and or

1831.24

here's your latest invoice and the three

1832.679

others you haven't paid yet let me know

1835.039

if you have any questions blah blah blah

1837.399

you know that kind of stuff have a good

1838.84

week you know it's that kind of stuff

1840.559

here's a bill enjoy your week so do you

1843.96

can always like you know sort of put

1846

good news and bad news together in that

1848.12

little you know in a couple of emails I

1849.76

would not oh rap sort of a follow-up to

1852.88

that do not put the invoice if you if

1856.08

you have something like that where

1856.96

you're emailing

1858.559

communication do a separate email for

1861.44

the invoice it is way too easy if you

1863.72

include it with something else that it

1865.679

gets put somewhere it doesn't it gets

1867.32

lost or something like that always do a

1869.399

separate email and if you have to follow

1872.32

up you can go back and do a reply with

1875.32

that or a forward or whatever you need

1876.919

to from that email and that will help

1879.399

you out quite a bit what will also help

1882.08

you out quite a bit is US wrapping this

1884.399

one up so we're going to wrap up this

1886.279

episode we will come back next time it

1888.2

will actually be our pin ultimate I

1891.08

think it is pin ultimate uh episode

1893.76

because we're going to do that one and

1894.799

we're going to come up with the season

1895.88

wrap up and then we will jump into

1897.36

season

1898.84

23 so crazy I'm still like a little bit

1902.6

like rocked by that it's like that's a

1904

lot like I said that's like I think

1905.88

that's 10 twice the the 10 episodes that

1909.039

most podcasts last in Seasons not in

1913

episodes so go out there and have

1914.559

yourself a good one as always leave us

1916.76

comments leave us you know email for uh

1919.76

contact us form out at RB at developin

1923.679

or.com obviously I've it's gone on too

1926.799
