A common decision in career advancement is choosing BootCamps or custom training. Do we follow a syllabus or create our own? While there is a dizzying amount of options available on almost every subject, that general format is often a first step. We can either step back and return to a school approach or decide to research and piecemeal our way to greater knowledge. There are pros and cons to each option.

Which is Best? Bootcamps or Custom Training

The decision is one that is different for everyone and thus should include some careful consideration. There are numerous attributes of each of these approaches that may factor into your decision. That includes things like topics available, how quickly you can learn, how preferred instructors teach, and much more. However, we will focus on a few areas that can help you at least decide on your preferred approach.

Laser or Scattershot

One of the most significant differences between these two approaches is how tie is required of the students. A boot camp will typically be immersive and push students to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. This approach can limit one’s ability to keep a day job. However, it also tends to get one across the finish line faster. The custom approach is almost always going to allow the student to work at their own pace. That allows them to squeeze in learning amongst a typical schedule and allow time to digest the information they consume.

Switching Gears

One overlooked difference between these two approaches is the cost of mentally switching gears. While a custom approach allows us to do things on our schedule, it also allows for more interruptions and distractions. Those can make it difficult to comprehend and retain the material one is studying fully. That can be a significant factor in choosing BootCamps or custom training.

The Bottom Line

The last thing I want to highlight here is the cost of the two approaches. There are as many pricing approaches to training as there are topics. However, a BootCamp will far more often ask for a larger sum of money during that compressed learning time. The custom approach can be spread out over months or years and allow one to spread the costs over the same period. You may not get there as quickly, and that can make it hard to truly leverage your new knowledge unless you find a way to use it and apply it as you go.
